Question 1
Focus: Academic Preparation Rationale: The University seeks to enroll students who take initiative in pursuing their education (for example, developing a special interest in science, language or the performing arts; involvement in educational preparation programs including summer enrichment programs, research, or academic development programs such as EAOP, MESA, Puente, COSMOS or other similar programs.) This question seeks to understand a student's motivation and dedication to learning. Question: What is your intended major? Discuss how your interest in the field developed and describe any experience you have had in the field - such as volunteer work, internships and employment, participation in student organizations and activities - and what you have gained from your involvement. My decision to major in Environmental/Managerial Economics began with my study and experience at De Anza College. After completing my general education coursework, I researched business cycles and international markets. Shortly after examining major business entities, I became displeased at their incessant pursuit for profit maximization at the expense of other major concerns such as the environment. Such indifference, lead me to pursue behavioral economics to understand the influence of the decision making process. This field enhanced my appreciation for the interrelationship between the social, physical, and environmental sciences. During my stint with academics I got involved with different social projects in various economically depressed areas. When I worked on the crisis relief for the Niger and Mali famine, gathering funds to provide food and water pumps in those regions, I developed a more conscious sentiment towards the world and realized how such disasters could be prevented through more effective resource allocation. Furthermore, my perspective on resource management was strengthened during my stay in Algeria observing hazardous sites and unregulated oil fields. My life in school coupled with my experiences abroad brought my attention to the importance of our environment and its interaction with the economy. |
